Crime and poverty plague this area.

This is where Martin Luther King Jr. spoke to residents in the community a couple of days before he died,
back in 1968.

HIV and substance abuse halfway house?

Some shots of Second Baptist Church.

I like this church a lot because they have a halfway house next door that helps HIV positive people and those
struggling with substance abuse.

Sign reads "we are praying for the politicians of Paterson"

which church is this?

The fourth ward

I remember the first time I was in the Fourth Ward. My dad drove me around here when I was twelve.
The Fourth Ward located in the center of the city, right next to the downtown area, is rich in culture. A pastor talks to a young woman about her issues, a teenager walks with his mother and brother to a restaurant with a boom box, and a group of five boys in a pack riding bicycles laugh with each other.

It seems things are nicer when you’re younger.

The Fourth Ward is largely poverty stricken and crime ridden. There are open air drug markets, vacants lots, and buildings with boarded up windows. Many addicts from all over the state come here to purchase drugs.  They go to these neighborhoods, purchase drugs for wholesale, and sell them in the suburbs.

The Fourth Ward has the highest amount of crime in the city, crimes such as rape and assault. During these recent days, the police have really worked to keep this neighborhood in the center of the city as crime free as possible. More victims are now calling the police when they get robbed, which is a good thing.

so is there better relations between community and police?

The fourth ward
Whites were there
Probably looking for drugs
Two white girl with boots very nice rich girl looking
Middle aged white guy and his friend there probably not for drugs
Young black males in front of building doing nothing all day
An alcoholic talking to himself on Park Avenue near Straight Street. Almost near the train tracks.
The fourth ward feels cursed.
Little kids happily going from school is a sad reminder that not all kids even in the US live in the same circumstances.

Van Houten "Prostitute Row"
what people in the fourth ward often lack in material things, they don't lack when it comes to faith.

it seems like there is at least one church every two blocks and the demoniations are varied--Roman Catholic, Presbertyrian, Methodist, Pentecostal but most belong to the Baptist affiliation.

Second Baptist Church -

The Second Baptist Church is very committed to helping out the needs of the community!

Rising Dove Senior Apartments and Rising Above Substance Abuse and HIV ministry are two of their projects.

There is SBCDC

The fourth ward is also Paterson's most violent neighborhood.
Many residents engage in drug trafficking or prostitution to put food on the table.?
