the building on the left looks like what could be an outdoor bar.  

This is what surprised me as an American that in the Dominican Republic, you could drink beer in public and there are even outdoor bars.  

I hear McDonald's and Burger King sell beer there.  This doesn't shock me because in Portugal, the Burger King I went to sold beer.

Another thing that surprised in the DR, it was legal to ride in the cabin of the truck. 

and I saw more people riding in motorcycles than in cars in the countryside, this does not hold true in the capital, though.
